• SAGE Teacher Education Program: Math Training

At MSOSV, our commitment to nurturing the mathematical minds of our young learners is unwavering. Recently, through our Sage Teacher Education Program, we hosted a Montessori Math refresher and training session for our Lead Guides. This initiative aimed to deepen our understanding of Montessori math principles and enhance our teaching methodologies.

    Embracing the Mathematical Mind

Dr. Maria Montessori recognized the innate mathematical potential within every child. She believed that children possess a natural ability to abstract, reason, and calculate. Our training session emphasized this philosophy, exploring how sensorial materials like the Pink Tower and Brown Stair lay the groundwork for abstract mathematical concepts such as cubing and squaring. These materials, with their inherent sequence and order, prepare children for more complex mathematical thinking.

    Structured Progression in Montessori Math

The Montessori math curriculum is meticulously designed to guide children from concrete experiences to abstract reasoning. Our session delved into this progression, covering:

    • Quantity and Numeral Recognition to 10: Helping children understand numbers through tangible experiences.
    • Introduction to the Decimal System: Using materials like the Golden Beads to illustrate units, tens, hundreds, and thousands.
    • Operations: Engaging in addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division using hands-on tools.
    • Fractions: Introducing parts of a whole through visual and tactile materials.

This structured approach ensures that children build a solid foundation, fostering confidence and a genuine love for mathematics.

    Integrating Neuroscience and Montessori Principles

Our training also highlighted the intersection of neuroscience and Montessori education. Understanding how the brain develops and processes mathematical concepts allows us to tailor our teaching strategies effectively. By aligning our methods with neurodevelopmental principles, we can better support each child’s unique learning journey.

Looking Ahead: Continuous Growth and Collaboration

The refresher session was a collaborative experience. Our Lead Guides engaged in discussions, shared insights, and reflected on best practices. This collective effort reinforces our commitment to continuous growth and excellence in Montessori education.

As we move forward, we are excited to implement the insights gained, ensuring that our classrooms remain dynamic spaces where mathematical minds flourish.

Continuing the Journey with Maitri Learning

As part of our Sage Teacher Education Program, we proudly incorporate Maitri Learning’s Math Album to support our guides in delivering high-fidelity Montessori instruction. This invaluable resource offers detailed lessons, theory, and clear visuals that align beautifully with Dr. Montessori’s vision for mathematical learning.
