Three Years of Learning, Coming Together: A Look at Kindergarten This Spring
Spring at MSOSV is a special time. And for our Kindergarteners, it is nothing short of a celebration of everything they have become.
Every skill, every moment of focused work, every challenge they pushed through over the past three years is now visible in what they are creating and doing right now. This is the season where it all comes together, and it is remarkable to witness.
The Button Tree
One of the most meaningful projects our Kindergarteners complete this spring is their button tree. This is not a simple craft. Creating a button tree requires fine motor precision, patience, focus, and an artistic eye. Every skill involved has been developed gradually over years of Montessori work, from the earliest practical life activities to the more refined handwork our children have grown into. When a child finishes their button tree and holds it in their hands, they are holding tangible evidence of their own growth. We frame them and they take these home, and many families treasure them for years.
Writing Their Own Stories
Our Kindergarteners are also writing and illustrating their own short narrative stories this spring. This is a milestone that reflects an incredible arc of language development: from the first phonetic sounds introduced in the primary years, through early reading and writing, to original storytelling with their own characters, plot, voice, and illustrations. Each story is bound into a book. One copy stays at
MSOSV to become part of our library, a permanent record of this child’s voice at this moment in their life. The other goes home with the child.
The Scrapbook Journey
Our Kindergarteners have been building personal scrapbooks since the beginning of the year, documenting their own learning and growth across many areas. As they near the end of Kindergarten, they revisit those earlier pages and see clearly how far they have come: how their writing has changed, how their drawings have evolved, how their thinking has deepened. These scrapbooks will be presented at the Moving Up Ceremony and taken home as a treasured keepsake.
Planting Something That Will Last
At the Moving Up Ceremony, our Kindergarteners will also participate in a planting ceremony. Each Kindergarten class plants something that will remain at the school after they have moved on. It is a beautiful act of legacy: a reminder that they were here, that they contributed something to this community, and that their time at MSOSV will continue to grow even after they leave.
We are so proud of our Kindergarteners. They have worked hard, grown enormously, and are ready for every step ahead.
