Summer Habitats 2026: Diving into the Ocean
We have just wrapped up two wonderful weeks exploring the Ocean Habitat!
From gentle splashes to shiny shells and “swimming” goldfish, our children across all age groups have been fully immersed in the wonders of the sea through joyful, hands-on Montessori experiences.
Whether they were washing shells, stamping with them, floating leaf boats, or building ocean layers in their keepsakes, every child experienced the ocean in ways that matched their age and curiosity.
What Each Age Group Explored in the Ocean
Nido (9 months – 2 years)
Our youngest learners delighted in sensory-rich ocean experiences. They explored smooth shells, listened to ocean sounds, practiced shell pouring and wiping, and added a shiny blue “Ocean Splash” page to their Sensory Habitat Touch Book. The heavy water play with floating shells brought giggles and wide-eyed wonder.
Pre Primary (2–3 years)
Our toddlers proudly washed and sorted shells, matched ocean animals to pictures and sounds, practiced one-to-one shell counting, and created beautiful shell stampings and wave collages. They enjoyed the “Ocean Snack” with blue gelatin and goldfish and added their special shell to their Sensory Touch Book. The extended outdoor water play was a favorite!
Primary (3–5 years)
Our Primary children dove deeper with 3-part ocean nomenclature cards, shell washing and pouring, teen counting with shells, texture grading, ocean biome map work, and building a simple ocean food chain. They created shell-stamped art and wave collages on the art shelf, enjoyed blue gelatin with goldfish, and added rich 2-page spreads to their “My Habitats Adventure Book.”
Kindergarten (5–6 years)
Our Kindergarten students took on leadership roles while following the Primary curriculum. They conducted shell graphing and research, built detailed ocean food chains, worked on their Habitat Journals with more writing and reflection, and added an ocean layer to their shoebox dioramas. They also enjoyed reading ocean stories to their younger reading buddies.
Highlights from the Ocean
- Children collected real shells and enjoyed extended water play during outdoor time.
- The classrooms were filled with the sounds of splashing, stamping, and happy voices pretending to be ocean creatures.
- Everyone contributed to their personal keepsake book or diorama.
- Teachers observed growing confidence with water, richer ocean vocabulary, and beautiful moments of collaboration and pretend play.
The ocean has taught us about movement, textures, hidden life beneath the waves, and the importance of caring for our blue planet.
Next up: We journey into the Desert Habitat! We can’t wait to explore warm sands, clever adaptations, and sunny adventures with all our students.
Thank you to our wonderful families for your partnership this summer. We encourage you to continue the ocean exploration at home; fill a basin with water, float some safe toys, and talk about what lives in the sea!
